Visit by the IFHIMA Western Pacific Regional Director

On March 10, 2026, the Japan Society of Health Information Management welcomed Ms. Cassandra Rupnik, a member of the IFHIMA Western Pacific Regional Board, during her visit. During her visit, we provided an explanation of certification and education for Health Information Management Specialists in Japan, presenting the Japan Society of Health Information Management’s informational brochure and its practice guidelines.

During this visit, Ms. Cassandra Rupnik introduced the Clinical Coding Practice Framework available on the HIMAA website. In addition, discussions focused on the current state of education in each country. Japan will also be adopting the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) starting in January 2027. Furthermore, clinical coding issues that need to be resolved as part of the ICD-11 adoption were also discussed during the visit. Other issues requiring resolution prior to ICD-11 implementation were also discussed during this visit.

Lastly, we reaffirmed our commitment to promoting information exchange among IFHIMA Western Pacific Region members regarding the status of ICD-11 implementation in each country and coding practices. We exchanged information on the 52nd JSHIM Academic Conference and the HIMAA 2026 Conference and reaffirmed our commitment to ongoing collaboration.
