Dear IFHIMA colleagues,
In what was a year of taking the whole community into action of improving the health information management profession in the country, I am writing to provide an insight on the incidents as the year 2018 unfolded here in Botswana.
Following the completion of the 1st BSc (Hons) Health Information Management group in 2017 we honored a graduation ceremony on June 14th 2018 in which 160+ HIM professionals were ushered with their qualifications. That was highlighted as a big milestone for the country as these professionals are now deploying around the country in health care institutions and health research centers. As this group was enrollees from 2013 there are other 5 groups from the intakes which followed up to 2018 which are expected to complete their BSc in Health Information Management.
We have been working hard in raising community awareness in efforts to revitalize our professional development, industrial network programs and advocating for a restructure on the approach of involving the HIM workforce in the health care sector. As a highlight on this case we recently attended a global conference on Non-communicable diseases conference where we got to encounter with some governments officials and industrial experts from the health care sector, more appraisals were passed for we having brought such an initiative which focuses on the quality of health information management. Some industrial captains were stressing on BoHIMA to take the lead in all matters relating to health information management in both the government and the private sector. All the 2018 efforts has lead us to have a very rich 2019 year calendar which includes the possibility of hosting the 1st annual HIM conference, this will be biggest event of the year 2019 building up to the 2019 IFHIMA congress in Dubai. Among other activities to make 2019 a success we to host an HIM fair, themed workshops (HIM maladministration zero tolerance, who is your employer, ready to practice, etc.) and celebrate HIM week as its already happening elsewhere. Also in 2019 we are striving to put together programs that will provide our members with valuable information and opportunities to network.
We have had a change of leadership in the steering committee; BoHIMA has nominated a new President for the association in what was a reshuffle for the whole committee. Our National IFHIMA Director Mr. Star Chibemba is the new association President taking over from Mr. Oarabile Setime, below is the full structure of the new BoHIMA committee;
President- Mr. Star Chibemba
Vice President- Mr. Bokamoso Masikara
Secretary General- Mr. Oaitse Hubona
Executive secretary- Mr. Kevin Tupane
Finance manager- Ms. Marea Theetso
Marketing manager- Ms. Samantha Debruin
Human capital manager- Ms. Tumalano Evelyn Modise
Additional member- Mr. Kutanga Dintwa
Additional member- Ms. Lynette Kgomotso
2018 was a year of engaging the industry in discussions which will shape the future of HIM in Botswana, 2019 BoHIMA is revitalized and ready to transform into a hub which our fraternity needs. And we are really grateful for being part of IFHIMA as its involvement has done a lot for us in terms of the status and bench marking in all matters relating to the profession.
